MATT STEVENS
Electric Vehicle Society established the “Howard Hutt Award for Excellence in the Advancement of Electric Transportation” to recognize individuals who have engaged in outstanding efforts towards the advancement of electric transportation in Canada.
We are excited to announce Matt Stevens as the recipient of the 4th Annual Howard Hutt Award. Matt is honoured for his nearly 20 years of work on hybrid and electric vehicles, ranging from cars to trucks to lunar rovers.
Matt holds a B.A.Sc and Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo, with a focus on electric powertrain design and battery degradation. For a number of years, Matt was an Adjunct Professor in the Chemical Engineering department at the University of Waterloo where he helped guide research related to battery research, vehicle-grid integration and electric vehicle design. Matt was also named Waterloo’s Top 40 under 40.
Matt served on the board of Electric Mobility Canada (EMC) for eight years, including a term as chairperson. He was Canada’s representative on the IEC ahG81 working group focused on electric vehicle and infrastructure standards, and was a member of the CANC/IEC Council. In 2018, Matt received EMC’s Al Cormier Award for his contributions to electric mobility in Canada.
One of Matt’s most notable achievements was as co-founder and CEO of FleetCarma (CrossChasm Technologies Inc.), which was originally a consulting firm providing design and prototyping services for EVs but transitioned to developing EV fleet telematics. FleetCarma helped utilities capture the necessary real-world data to prepare for widespread vehicle electrification and begin shaping EV load. Over an eight year period, FleetCarma became the global leader in EV telematics. In 2018, FleetCarma was sold to Geotab and Matt led the integration of the fleet-focused product line in 2019. From 2018 to 2021, Matt was Vice President, Electric Vehicles where he led all aspects of Geotab’s EV fleet products. He was responsible for the development of products that enable organizations to successfully integrate, operate and scale electric vehicles in their fleets. For a number of years, Matt served as executive sponsor and board advisor at Geotab, supporting Geotab’s Customer Sustainability efforts focused on helping fleets around the world reduce their carbon footprint.
Through the team’s efforts, Geotab has become the #1 telematics company in the world, with the largest multi-make EV dataset in the world, and over 3.3 million devices working with large fleets around the world, including UPS, Pepsi, Amazon, and others. Today, the Geotab team is focused on doing everything possible to help these fleets reduce their emissions as successfully and quickly as possible – with electrification being a large part of it. The Geotab team’s tools include an EV Suitability Assessment tool, EV Charge Assurance dashboard, and integrated real-time EV data into charging networks.
