Electric Vehicle Society Windsor-Essex would like to express our enthusiastic support of the City of Windsor’s City Council report “Facilitating the Transition to Electric Vehicles” which was accepted in the January 18, 2021 council meeting.
The City of Windsor has been leading by example with EVs in their fleet for many years including 8 EVs currently and plans for 6 more. We encourage the city to continue with policies and bylaws that help promote adoption of EVs and continue utilizing programs such as ZEVIP that will allow for the installation of 23 public charging connectors and possibly more in the future. The initiatives are important to increase the adoption rate of EVs and help with the Windsor’s Community Energy Plan.
We also applaud the motion put forward by Councillor Chris Holt recommending the City compose a letter to the Province “asking for reconsideration of the electric vehicle rebate program as well as changes to the Ontario building code making EV charging rough-ins mandatory in new construction”. This motion was adopted by Council on Jan 18, 2021.
The City of Windsor’s efforts along with its stakeholders and partners will strengthen Windsor’s automotive industry and transition towards becoming Canada’s Automobility Capital while meeting Greenhouse Gas Reduction targets. Those collaborations include; Enwin, WE EDC, local schools, industry leaders, and ERCA with its Community and Regional Energy Plans.
