Camp Engies & EV Society

Thanks to Camp Engies for inviting us to Bracebridge to talk about EVs to bright young women interested in engineering. The opportunity to inspire these future engineers is one way to encourage more equality in EV manufacturing and more diversity in future career paths.

Camp Engies aims to increase the percentage of women in engineering in Canada by:

  • Educating campers in a unique atmosphere for a highly subsidized fee.
  • Providing an environment free of gender bias to engage with various engineering role-models and engineering activities.
  • Introducing our campers to life-long engineering mentors and allies

Doug Beckett & Caitlin Rodger from the Municipal Affairs committee were successful in their application to the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS) Fast Track program to hire a student for a 6-week contract to complete a project in support of local government EV policy solutions across the country.
  • The Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions is a climate research collaboration between BC’s four leading research universities and works to connect researchers with the public and private sector to develop innovative climate change solutions.
  • The student will be responsible for investigating electric vehicle policies, programs, and strategies currently being deployed at the municipal level across Canada and internationally that reduce local barriers to EV ownership and support current EV owners.
  • The outcome of the research will establish a comprehensive database of resources, organized into a publicly accessible central location housed on the EVS website.
  • The contract will be awarded to a student currently enrolled at the University of Northern British Columbia and will commence in September.

PAST EVENT: Barrie-Orillia Road Rally 2022

The Barrie-Orillia Chapter of EV Society held a road rally in Barrie on June 4th, 2022.  The event featured a scavenger hunt for landmarks that were located along a mapped route that took participants from the location of EV chargers in a Barrie parking lot to Friday Harbour, Innisfil and back to Barrie for a lunch at a popular restaurant.  The route was designed to travel through scenic parts for an enjoyable sight seeing tour of the area and participants were given a check sheet to complete when they located each landmark along the route.  Each received a travel mug for successfully finding them all.  Nine people took part, and everyone had a good time and enjoyed interesting and lively conversation at the restaurant.  The planning committee for this year’s event; Dave VanAlstyne, Ron Fischer, Keith Beckley and Gary Walsh.  We enjoyed perfect weather and there was an agreement that this should be a yearly event, so look for bigger and better next year.

Kenneth Bokor, The EV Revolutionist

As soon as Tesla revealed its Model 3 in March 2016, Ken Bokor was hooked and excited about the EV marketplace.  Ken has always been passionate about helping combat climate change, helping our environment, and making the world healthier for all.

Since the purchase of his first EV, a 2018 Nissan Leaf, he has been motivated to inform and educate consumers about EVs and how they can lower costs and help the environment.  In April 2018, Ken created a successful YouTube Channel called the “EV Revolution Show”, where he continues to produce and host.  The channel mainly consists of a mix of new-style shows, auto reviews, and events coverage, with a number of episodes that focus on his own personal Model 3 experiences.  Rather than using a “fan boy” approach like many other channels, Ken chose to deliver his message in a journalistic and factual manner.  Today, Ken’s channel has an international audience of over 28,000 subscribers, with over 175 video episodes and over 1.6 million views.  In addition to his YouTube channel, Ken augments his outreach with his Audio Podcasts (www.evrevolutionshow.com), where he features various guest from the EV industry, including, OEMs, supply chain, and consumers.

Ken is also a proud member of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) with Canadian media credentials.  He’s often invited to OEM media vehicle launch events in both Canada and the U.S.  As well, Ken has appeared as an EV expert on mainstream media, such as CBC’s The National and Global News Radio 640 Toronto, in addition to being a regular guest on podcasts and various events.

In January 2020, Ken started and currently runs the Caledon Chapter of EV Society.  He has also attended and helped out other EVS chapters, and often provides a “EV 101” talk to many organizations and the general public.

EV Society applauds and celebrates Ken’s ongoing efforts towards EV adoption, especially his success in such a short period of time.
